P7AS Erupting Volcano Experiment

28th Sep 2020

We concluded our afternoon with a fun science experiment! We have been learning about volcanoes and how they are formed so we had a look today at a chemical reaction in action!

We poured some water into a cup, mixed in some baking soda and washing up liquid, added a couple of drops of food colouring to make our ‘lava’ red and lastly we added some vinegar (very quickly).  When the vinegar (an acid) was mixed with the baking soda or bicarbonate of soda (an alkali) the chemical reaction produced carbon dioxide, a gas.  The bubbles formed created pressure in the liquid so it expanded and escaped causing an eruption.  We had great fun making a chemical reaction in the classroom.  Have a look at the results!  ðŸŒ‹
